Modern Foreign Languages

At Lothersdale Primary School, we believe learning languages is imperative to a child’s education. Therefore we start our MFL journey with the children from Reception (Spring/Summer term) which enables our curriculum to be ambitious for all pupils.
The programme ‘Camembear’ is progressive with planned recalls of units from R to Y2.

From Year 3 – 6 we have a progressive programme developed from the Language Angels unit. The platform aids teacher’s CPD as well as being planned to be progressive from the previous work in Reception to Year 2.

The units come with knowledge organisers which are placed in the front of the children’s book at the start of each new unit.

Our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.

We will help them develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar

Assessment

Peer and self-assessment throughout KS2 lessons.

Skills based assessments using bespoke skills assessment worksheets. This form of assessment enables us to determine the learning and progression of all pupils.

  • Cultural day – La galette des rois and L’Ephiphanie
  • French cuisine and traditions.
  • French Club – KS2 pupils during lunch times with Madame Gander (an ex-French professor).
