What is a School Council?

At Lothersdale Primary School, our School Council gives pupils a voice in how our school is run. It's a fantastic way for children to express their opinions, share ideas, and actively participate in decisions that shape school life. The School Council empowers pupils to make positive changes and create a better environment for everyone.

Who is on the School Council?

Each year, two representatives from each year group are elected by their peers to join the School Council. These pupils are chosen for being sensible, reliable, good listeners, and strong team players. They take on responsibilities such as attending meetings, listening to others’ views, and bringing forward new ideas to improve the school.

Why do we have a School Council at Lothersdale?

Our School Council ensures that every pupil's voice is heard, aligning with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that all children have the right to express their views and be listened to in matters that affect them. At Lothersdale, we believe in teamwork, respect, and valuing everyone’s contributions.

What does the School Council discuss?

The School Council tackles a wide range of topics, from fundraising for school projects and charities to discussing safety around school, after-school clubs, and anti-bullying initiatives. They work together as a team, often negotiating and making compromises, while also being realistic about what can and cannot be changed.

When does the School Council meet?

School Council meetings take place weekly, usually during an assembly or lunchtime. The meetings are brief, lasting around 20 minutes, but they are an important time for sharing ideas and making decisions.
